Breaking The Gasoline Habit

American drivers are leaving cars at home, and putting public transportation to use, at a record pace. High gas prices are stressing the American wallet. As one good example, Boston's subway (the "T") is seeing a record surge in riders, with growth increasing faster than in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington DC.

Most of Boston's new commuters have mixed feelings about their new-found public transportation usage. They say that crowded trains and buses reflect a bitter economic trade-off.

Meanwhile, automobile executives in Detroit and elsewhere are concluding that the gas-guzzling SUV craze was a bubble, which is now bursting.

Rides on all T branches surged more than 6% in the first three months of 2008 relative to the same period of 2007.
