Spreading Awareness, Encouraging Action
G8 Pledges To Cut Emissions The Group of 8 countries (G-8) have taken on climate change as one of the many issues that need to be addressed at an international level, not just by the most well off nations. (The G-8 includes: The United States, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United Kingdom.) In July 2008, the G-8 set a goal of cutting carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2050, but they had no luck in coming to an agreement with developing nations on how to address the climate change issue.
These actions are seen as just the beginning for international climate cooperation. Talks will continue in Copenhagen in 2009 when leaders will meet to discuss a successor to the Kyoto Protocols.
